Recently, I watched ‘The Aeronauts’ with my daughter. It was an incredible film, which seemed to be based on a true story. So, I looked it up. Turns out, they added a female character and dramatized it a bit, but the story is taken from the history of hot air balloon travel in the 1800s. James Glaisher was a scientist keenly interested in meteorology who saw the opportunity for study that hot air balloons afforded. He later wrote about his many findings in a book titled ‘Travels in the Air.’ He did not want it to just sit on the dusty shelves of fellow scientists, but rather wanted it accessible and understandable for the general public. The result is a fascinating and heavily illustrated book which would make an excellent ‘living book’ addition to a high school science course.
