Description
First Year in Number is a gentle, thoughtfully written arithmetic book designed to introduce young children to numbers through clear language, oral work, and everyday experiences. Rather than relying on busy pages or abstract drills, this book builds mathematical understanding step by step, helping children form a natural and confident relationship with numbers from the very beginning.
Lessons are short and carefully sequenced, emphasizing mental arithmetic, number sense, and practical application. Children are guided to observe, reason, and think, not merely memorize procedures. Many exercises are intended to be done orally or with simple objects, making this book especially well suited for one-on-one instruction and early elementary learners.
This book is an excellent fit for Charlotte Mason–inspired homeschooling, where short lessons, mastery, and understanding are valued over repetition and worksheets. As a true living math book, First Year in Number respects the child’s attention, encourages careful thinking, and lays a solid foundation for future arithmetic. It works beautifully as a primary math resource or as a supplement for families seeking a calmer, more thoughtful approach to early mathematics.
I used this delightful beginner math book with several of my children. It’s a simple, old-fashioned, very visual way to introduce your children to numbers and simple math concepts. It depicts little boys and girls very distinctly, which is a refreshing concept. Book can be used as a workbook. Published in 1912
